Hanif Kureishi’s novel The Black Album and the short story My Son the Fanatic depict contemporary Britain swamped in a religious explosion of radical Islam. They also illustrate white British hypocrisy and the constant molestation of hybrid immigrants. Due to their skin colour, they are exposed to humiliation regularly. The hostile behaviour of white Brits affects their maturation, forcing them to act in a different way. The goal of this paper is to analyze these two literary works and their protagonists as the epitome of hybrid identity, in the tradition of the postcolonial Bildungsroman in order to show that, for them, the only acceptable way is the third way.
