Abstract

The long-standing debate over the ethical value of literature has never been satisfactorily resolved. Those in favor of reading classic texts from an ethical perspective often have trouble stating precisely what is at stake, precisely because the literary qualities of a text regularly draw us away from moral to aesthetic considerations. That tension between the ethical and the literary lies at the heart of our most sustained reading experiences.
